The Humane Society of Broward County in partnership with the Broward County Sheriff's Office has partnered to create the STAR program. This program is being used as a preventative stress management tool to aid all public safety organizations with stress that is inherent in their line of work.
The premise behind the program is to help to reduce stress and anxiety, lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol.

The STAR program has been implemented in 10 Fire Stations in Broward County and has 9 volunteer Animal Assisted Therapy teams that visit each station on a monthly basis providing unconditional love and affection. There have been several scientific studies using healthy adults, healthy children, and adults with high blood pressure, which show that simply being in the presence of a dog, or petting an animal can reduce blood pressure, aid in relaxation and reduce stress.

This is the first pet facilitated therapy Public Safety Officials partnership the Humane Society of Broward County has embarked on and both organizations are extremely excited about it's potential for success.
