Teen Volunteer Program

The Humane Society of Broward County offers teenagers who are 14 years and older a structured volunteer program.  Teen volunteers are invited to help care for the animals for a period of 4 months for a weekly four-hour shift.  They can earn up to 64 hours of school community service hours.  At the end of four months, volunteers are removed from the program to allow for another group to have the same experience.  Please call Volunteer Services Department at 954.266.6814 for more information.



Teen Club

The Teen Club meets twice a month either after school or on a weekend morning or afternoon to discuss animal welfare issues and ways to promote the Humane Society of Broward County.  Attendance to meetings is extended to teenagers 14 years old or older on an ongoing basis.   Teens will receive invitations to monthly meetings and are expected to contact us as to whether they will attend the event or not.  For more information, please contact the Education Department at 954.266.6848


Animal Assisted Therapy

Volunteers can share their special pet’s companionship when together they visit residential care facilities, nursing homes, hospitals, libraries, schools and/or other special places.  HSBC must certify pet before being accepted into the program.

Shift: Flexible

 

Animal Care

Volunteers are desperately needed to assist the staff in maintaining the general welfare (feeding and cleaning) of the animals.  Volunteers are trained on how to keep animals’ cages clean and sanitized to promote a healthy environment.


Shift: Everyday, anytime between 8:00 a.m. – closing)

           (minimum of 3 hours per shift required)


Bathing

Volunteers wash dogs, not groom, prior to surgery and as needed. Bathing dogs in a gentle manner also helps it to remain calm and socialized.

Shift: Everyday, anytime between 9:00 a.m. – closing)

            (minimum of 2 hours per shift required)


Behavior Helpline Call-back Volunteer

Volunteers provide help and education to the public calling with questions regarding their pet’s problematic behavior(s) so that the pet will remain in the home.

Shift: Everyday; shifts vary and calls are made from home


Clinic

Volunteers are trained to clean instruments and how to put surgical packs together.  Volunteers also help with retrieving and returning animals from and to their cages.

Shift: Everyday, anytime between 9:00 a.m. – 3:00) (minimum of 4 hours per shift required)


Customer Service/Adoptions

Volunteers assist Adoption Counselors with different aspects of the adoption process.   Some of these duties include greeting and directing patrons, answering telephones and educating patrons about responsible pet ownership.

Shift: Everyday, anytime, between 9:00 a.m. – closing (minimum of 4 hours per shift required)


Dog Walking

Qualified volunteers provide exercise and mental stimulation for the dogs. Dog Walking Volunteers walk dogs on a pre-determined route on shelter grounds.  Personal experience with different dog breeds is a required. 

Shift: Monday – Friday, (9:00 a.m.  – 12:00) and (11:00 a. m. – 4:00)


Education Assistant 

Volunteers are needed to teach children and adults about the responsibilities of caring for a pet.  Topics covered are pet safety, pet overpopulation, adopting from a shelter and making a lifetime commitment to your pet.

Shift: As needed


Education Dog

Volunteers bring their dog to assigned school locations on designated dates and times for children to interact with.  Instructing children on proper pet care is also done during these visits.

Education/Event Staff

Humane Society of Broward County volunteers sometimes assist with in-shelter and community events, effectively representing the shelter in a positive and informed manner.

Shift: As needed


Foster Care

Volunteers provide temporary care for puppies and kittens, cats and dogs, who are not yet ready to be put up for adoption due to being too young or ill. (An initial supply of pet food and other necessary items are provided by the Humane Society of Broward County.)

Greeter

Volunteers help direct patrons and answer their basic questions.  Greeters must have strong interpersonal skills and enjoy interacting with the general public in a non-judgmental and professional manner.  

Shift: Everyday; (10:00 a.m. – 2:30) and (2:30 p.m. – closing)


Guide (Kennels or Cattery)

Volunteers provide measured guidance and basic information to patronsin the kennel and cattery areas regarding adoption process and information on different breeds. 

Shift: Everyday, anytime between 11:00 a.m. – closing

            (minimum of 4 hours per shift required)


Pet Boutique

Volunteers provide helpful and courteous sales assistance to patrons and assist with the inventory needs of the Pet Boutique.  Volunteers also assist patrons with basic general questions.

Shift: Everyday, (11:00  a.m.  – 3:00) and (3:00 p.m. – closing)


Petting, Attention & Love (PAL)

Volunteers are trained to help meet the emotional and social needs of the animals in our shelter by providing a one-on-one interaction with the dogs in a kennel
