This is NO Joy Ride!
By letting your dog ride unsecured in the open bed of your pickup truck, you may be unintentionally causing him great harm. And, it’s against the law! There are other hazards to consider: • Flying debris can easily become lodged in a pet’s nasal passages and windpipe or can cause permanent eye damage. • Hot sun against an open truck bed can heat the metal floor enough to burn a pet’s paw pads. • Without protection from the broiling sun, a pet can suffer heatstroke within a short time once the truck has stopped. • If you should stop short (or brake unexpectedly), your dog could be thrown from the truck, resulting in severe injury or being hit by another car.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
It is safest to allow your dog to ride inside the truck cab or leave him or her at home. If your dog must ride in the back of the truck, put your pet inside a crate that will give some protection from wind and weather. Tie the crate securely to the walls of the truck bed so it cannot slide about or be tossed out of the truck. The Humane Society of Broward County urges you: DON’T let your dog travel unsecured in an open pickup truck bed! Know the SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE: • Excessive panting • Glassy staring • Dizziness • Vomiting • Collapse IF A PET DOES BECOME OVERHEATED • Get your pet into the shade. • Apply cold towels to the head, neck and chest to slowly reduce high temperature. • If conscious, give a small amount of water or allow to lick ice cubes. • Get the pet to a veterinarian immediately. Caution: Hot Car -- Hot Pet! |
