How many locations does the Humane Society have?
We have only one shelter located at 2070 Griffin Road, just west of I-95 in Fort Lauderdale. We also have mobile pet adoptions at the PETCO in Boca Raton.
 
Is the Humane Society of Broward County a “no-kill” shelter?
The Humane Society of Broward County is an open admission shelter. This means we accept all owned animals regardless of their condition. Animals must be friendly and healthy to go up for adoption. Those not meeting this criteria are euthanized. Many “no-kill” shelters will only take in pets they know they can find homes for or turn people away when they are full. So where is the pet to go then?

Do I have to make an appointment to drop off my pet?
No, the shelter is open seven days a week and the receiving department opens at 8:00 AM everyday.

Is there a time limit for animals?
Once an animal is evaluated and goes up for adoption, there is not a time limit, as long as the pet stays friendly and healthy.

Is there a fee to drop off my pet?
We do not charge a fee to drop off your pet; however we do accept donations to help take care of the animals we receive.

I cannot keep my pet, will you pick it up?
The Humane Society of Broward County does not have a pick up service.

Where does the Humane Society of Broward County get the money to operate?
The Humane Society of Broward County relies on the generosity of our community and companies to fund our operations and programs budget. We do not get funding from the government, United Way or any other national or local organizations with similar names. Income sources are: adoption fees; services such as dog obedience, vaccination clinics, spay/neuter programs; pet boutique sales; fundraising events; grants; general donations and from those people who leave the shelter in their will.

How many dogs and cats does the shelter receive each week?
Depending on the time of year, the shelter receives an average of 300 - 400 animals per week. In the Spring the shelter can receive more than 200 kittens a week in addition to the other dogs, cats and puppies.

Does the Humane Society of Broward County pick up stray pets?
No, this is the responsibility of Broward County Animal Care and Regulation. Their number is 954-359-1313.

Does the shelter offer veterinarian services so the public can bring their pets there?
At the current time, the Humane Society of Broward County offers affordable spay/neuter services and five times a year holds vaccination clinics.

Does the shelter offer affordable spay or neuter services for my pet?
Yes, prices start at $20.00 for a male cat. Call 954-463-7729 to make an appointment. This is a call back service and we receive hundreds of calls each week. Please allow five business days for a return call to schedule the appointment.

My pet is old and I can’t afford to take it to the vet to have it put to sleep (euthanized). Can I bring my pet to the shelter?
Yes, the Humane Society of Broward County does this as free service, we do however ask for a donation. If you would like the pet’s remains returned, there is a set fee for the cremation process and this is based on the size of the pet. We are open seven days a week for your convenience and receiving opens at 8:00 AM everyday. Please go to the west side of the building to the receiving department and the associate there will be able to assist you.

I’m going on vacation, can I board my pet at the Humane Society of Broward County?
Although the shelter is very large, we do not offer pet boarding.

How many pets does the Humane Society of Broward County adopt out?
Every year more and more pets find homes as a result of our efforts. In 2007, we placed 9,923 pets into new homes.
