The Humane Society of Broward County is proud to announce that Senator Nan Rich has agreed to work with Sharron Carmichael, our Cruelty Investigator of 17 years on a state bill to prohibit the long-term cruel chaining of dogs. Connecticut was the first state to pass a statewide law in 2003 and just recently California passed a law in 2006. Florida needs to be next! It's time to protect our children and man's best friend from a most cruel and dangerous practice.

Please write Senator Nan Rich today to thank her for supporting this bill. Write to your representative or to the Governor encouraging them to support this much needed law as well. Please feel free to use sample attached letter or create your own.

If you would like a FREE "Break the Chain Kit" (plus the cost of shipping and handling) to learn more about the suffering of chained dogs and to learn how to change the laws in your community - e-mail your mailing address to ccrane@hsbroward.com.

Nikki, an adopted alumni serves as our spokes dog for the "Break The Chain" Campaign. Nikki was a victim of being chained for so long that her little puppy collar grew into her neck and had to be surgically removed by the Humane Society clinic when she was an adult. Nikki was a very lucky dog because she was given a second chance and now lives a great life with her new family. Her new dad who is an officer with the Broward County Sheriff’s Department agreed to pose for our “Break the Chain” poster and like us feels adamantly about the cause. We would also like to thank the Broward Sheriff’s Office for their support in this worthwhile campaign.

During our campaign we also are creating a press kit, new brochure, public service announcement, stickers, bookmarkers and holding a county wide poster contest where children can create a poster encouraging others not to chain their dog. We are also researching counties from all over the United States to find out about strengthening our laws. Currently, Broward County Animal Care and Regulation and the Broward County City Commissioners are considering changing our current law. Write to them to express your feelings about this issue.

The Education Department will launch it's first ever “Break the Chain” Campaign this May in the hopes of bringing attention to the tragedy of dogs who live their lives on the end of a chain.

A little about the lives of chained dogs …Dogs that live their lives on the end of chains lead miserable lives. Dogs are pack animals which mean they like to live in groups, today their pack is their human family. When a social animal like this is isolated from their pack they suffer horribly. They tend to become depressed, aggressive, barkers, chewers, diggers and in general are bored and miserable. A chained dog is 3 times more likely to bite than a dog that lives inside with their family. In addition, chained dogs are neglected. They become an ornament or a thing in the backyard rather than a sentient, feeling being. At the Humane Society of Broward County our Cruelty Investigator spends a good majority of her time investigating the neglect of dogs that are chained. These dogs are typically malnourished, full of parasites, mange, filthy and dehydrated. What kind of life is that for man’s best friend?

Typically a dog ends up living on a chain because of behavior problems that were not addressed as a puppy. We encourage people to please call our Behavior Helpline at 954-266-6851 or register for our low-cost puppy or dog training classes at 954-266-6855. 97% of dog problems can be fixed if people will make a committment to their pet. If people are not committed to training their dog and would prefer to keep their dog chained up for life, please bring it to the Humane Society of Broward County so we can find the dog a home where it will be a part of a loving family.
